We Asked ChatGPT (AI) Questions About Web Design

We Asked Microsofts OpenAI Chat Bot (ChatGPT) To Answer Questions We Asked It About Web Design and Development

What Actually Is OpenAI’s ChatGPT Bot?

Over the past few weeks or months, you may have heard about ChatGPT or ‘OpenAI’ in the news or across social media as it’s been a hot topic from local web designers to silicon valley and big-tech leaders like Elon Musk.

GPT actually stands for “Generative Pre-Trained Transformer” and refers to the system of text-generating intelligence that can answer complex questions, solve problems, engage in conversations, and produce written content based on a user’s input. Don’t worry, we’re not quite at the level of Terminator or I-Robot movies. However, it does pose a complex conundrum regarding what AI has been able to achieve in recent months and how far it can go in the near future.

Rather than us boring you with detailed explanations of what ChatGPT is ourselves, we actually asked the bot to explain itself in less than 100 words.

Q: What Are You In Less Than 100 Words?

I am an artificial intelligence designed to assist users by answering questions and having conversations with them. I can provide information and insights on a wide range of topics and can generate human-like text. I do not have personal opinions or feelings, but rather provide responses based on my programming and training.

Then, for a bit of fun, we asked the same question but asked ChatGPT to speak like a teenager.

Q: What Are You In Less Than 100 Words But Speak Like A Teenager

Hey there! I’m an AI assistant here to help you out with whatever you need. I can give you info on all sorts of stuff and even have casual convos. I don’t have feelings or personal opinions since I’m just a machine, but I can still give you some pretty cool insights. Just ask me anything and I’ll do my best to help you out.

ChatGPT is even able to write full essays, answer complex questions on a diverse range of topics, and can solve problems like fixing code or settling arguments – all within a few seconds – pretty damn impressive if you ask us.

OpenAI’s goal is “To make AI systems more natural and safe to interact with. Your feedback will help us improve“. This makes sense, as people’s opinions on AI tend to vary. Some people are excited about the potential of AI to improve people’s lives, while others are more skeptical or even fearful of the technology destroying industries before it’s been able to be fully tried and tested.

There are many potential benefits of using AI in day-to-day life and work, such as the ability to automate tasks, improve decision-making, and increase efficiency. Many forward-thinking people see AI as a tool that can be used to solve complex problems and improve people’s quality of life. On the other hand, some people are concerned about the potential negative impacts of AI, such as job displacement and the loss of privacy. There are also concerns about the ethical implications of AI, such as the possibility of biased algorithms or the creation of superintelligent machines that could genuinely pose a threat to humanity.

What Does ChatGPT Think Of Web Design?

Q: What Do You Think Of Web Design?

Web design is a field that involves the creation of websites and web applications. It involves a range of skills, including graphic design, user experience design, and front-end development. Web designers are responsible for creating visually appealing and user-friendly websites that meet the needs of their clients or users.

In my opinion, web design is a important field because it plays a crucial role in how people interact with and use the internet. A well-designed website can make it easier for users to find the information they need, complete tasks, and have a positive experience while using the site. On the other hand, a poorly designed website can be frustrating and confusing for users, which can lead to a negative perception of the site and the organization it represents.

Overall, I think that web design is a fascinating field that requires creativity, technical skills, and an understanding of user behavior. It is constantly evolving as new technologies and design trends emerge, which keeps it exciting and challenging for those who work in the field.

Will AI Ever Replace Web Designers?

Probably the most important question that we needed to ask as web designers ourselves! We were curious to know if the AI bot itself thought it would ever replace us (so we could start planning new jobs!). We wondered if AI could become so advanced that you could enter your business name, logo, colours, services and AI would create a truly bespoke website with imagery, content, and optimisations in place to suit that individual and industry.

Q: Will AI Ever Replace Web Designers?

It is difficult to predict the future of AI and its potential impact on the field of web design. While AI has the potential to automate certain tasks and improve the design process, it is unlikely to fully replace human web designers.

Web design involves a range of skills, including visual design, user experience design, and front-end development. These skills require creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to understand and anticipate the needs of users. These are tasks that AI is not yet able to fully replicate.

That being said, it is possible that AI could eventually play a larger role in the field of web design, possibly assisting designers with certain tasks or providing them with new tools and insights. However, it is unlikely that AI will completely replace the need for human designers in the foreseeable future.

— Phew! It looks like we still have some time left to create amazing websites for our clients.

How Could ChatGPT Help Web Designers?

AIs, such as ChatGPT, can be used to help people in a professional way. Whether this is finding out information they don’t know and just need a simple answer to, coming up with new ideas, or even assessing and compiling data. We wanted to know how using AI might actually help Web Designers be more efficient and effective. Let’s see what AI thinks…

Q: How Can AI Help Web Designers?

  1. Generating design ideas: AI algorithms can be trained to generate design ideas based on a set of parameters or constraints, such as the type of website, target audience, and desired aesthetic. This could save designers time and effort by providing them with a starting point for their designs.
  2. Analyzing user behavior: AI can be used to analyze user behavior on websites and provide insights on how to improve the user experience. For example, AI can identify patterns in how users interact with a site and suggest design changes that could make the site more user-friendly.
  3. Automating repetitive tasks: AI can be used to automate repetitive tasks such as image resizing or code generation, freeing up designers to focus on more creative and strategic tasks.
  4. Improving accessibility: AI can be used to ensure that websites are more accessible to users with disabilities. For example, AI can be used to generate alternative text for images, making them more accessible to users who rely on screen readers.

Overall, AI has the potential to assist web designers by providing them with new tools and insights that can help them create better websites and improve the user experience.

After only playing around with ChatGPT for a few hours, we agree! Amongst other questions we asked ChatGPT to find an error we had placed in a piece of code – and it found it straight away! We even asked the bot to write a piece of code that would make our Athena Media ‘A’ logo spin. Here’s what it produced:

Spinning Logo

It even gave us some additional help and information based on the code it itself had just written…

This code will create a container element with a width and height of 200 pixels, and place the logo image inside it. The logo image will be set to 100% width and height of the container, so it will fill the container completely. The animation property is then used to apply a spinning animation to the cat image, which will make it rotate continuously. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

…it even wrote the exact code as we had asked it to – ready to paste straight in and use. Faster than it would to write the code or take existing code and alter it to suit.

What Are AI’s Limitations?

Of course, there’s always going to be certain limitations to Artificial Intelligence. ChatGPT gets all of it’s information from public sources – both what it can scrape from the web and users such as us asking it’s questions and correcting any confusions, sometimes the answer it gives can be incorrect – or downright confusing!

Take this example from a Twitter user:

Example ChatGPT Wrong Answer

ChatGPTs knowledge base ends in 2021, so it can’t stay up-to-date easily. So, as the modern world constantly evolves and changes – this AI may actually provide old or wrong answers to questions or arguments.

Another concern is the cost – with ChatGPT reportedly costing $3 million USD a day to run, the cost may outweigh the benefits, at least in the short-term.

How Can I Use ChatGPT?

We recommend you check it out for yourself! It truly is a fantastic tool to play around with and begin learning how AI can be used in a beneficial and interactive way – before it takes over and destroys the world that is!
